Setting Our Intention: A Journey of Self-Discovery

This is the first of twelve exercises you will be asked to complete before attending the workshop at the SOAR Foundation’s Awakening Youth Leadership Center. The purpose of this exercise is to provide an opportunity for you to look inside, to discover why you have chosen this path, to discover what you do to sabotage your choices in life, and develop strategies for changing the patterns that prevent you from becoming satisfied, actualized, joyful, and fulfilled.
Before you embark on any path ask yourself the question: Does this path have a heart? If the answer is no, you will know it, and then you must choose another path. The trouble is nobody asks the question; and when a man finally realizes that he has taken a path without a heart, the path is ready to kill him. At that point very few men can stop to deliberate, and leave the path. A path without a heart is never enjoyable. You have to work hard even to take it. On the other hand, a path with heart is easy; it does not make you work at liking it.
For me there is only the traveling on the paths that have a heart, on any path that may have a heart. There I travel, and the only worthwhile challenge for me is to traverse its full length. And there I travel–looking, looking, breathlessly.

The Journey To Ixtlan
The workshop is an exercise in self-discovery. As you prepare yourself for this program, ask yourself the following questions:
* Why did I choose to pursue this path with the SOAR Foundation? * What are my expectations? * What is my pay-off or reward? * What am I prepared to do? * How far am I prepared to go to achieve my objectives? * What single thing do I always do to sabotage my choices in life? * Why do I engage in this behavior? What is the payoff for me? * What does this behavior mean about me? * What would my life be like if I did not engage in this behavior? * What can I do about it?
Optional Strategies:
1. Select a jar, bowl or other container big enough to hold dollar bills. Beginning right now, each time you engage in your self-sabotaging behavior, put a dollar in the container. Each time you notice you are about to let it happen again, but find a way to resist it, take a dollar out. Bring the container with you to the workshop with the dollars intact. 2. Write a personal contract with yourself. Identify the behavior, name it, describe it and identify it in any way you can, that makes it unmistakably clear, what you do to sabotage the choices and commitments you make. Write a commitment statement which affirms that you recognize the nature of the behavior and promise to conquer it, each time it emerges, every time you recognize it. Describe what punishment you will exact when you fail and the reward you will receive when you succeed. Date and sign the contract. Make it as official and legally binding as you can. Print it and put it in a nice picture frame. Sit it where you can see it all the time, every day. Bring it with you when you come to the workshop. 3. Enlist the help of a friend or trusted confidant. If you can’t identify the behavior, ask someone you can trust, who will not shame or punish you to help you sort it out. When you are satisfied you have found it, go back to (1) or (2).
Journal Entries:
In your personal journal, memorialize your thoughts about your experience of this process. Include a copy of the contract. Describe any thoughts, observations or feelings you may have about the process after you have completed it. Use this opportunity to reaffirm in writing what you intend to accomplish by participating in the Awakening Youth Leadership Challenge program. Look inside and see, if you can, why this path resonates within you. Then express your gratitude for the blessings of the day and let it be.
